A Review of the Dynamics of Cavitating Pumps

چکیده

This paper presents a review of some of the recent developments in our understanding of the dynamics and instabilities caused by cavitation in pumps. Focus is placed on presently available data for the transfer functions for cavitating pumps and inducers, particularly on the compliance and mass flow gain factor, which are so critical for pump and system stability. The resonant frequency for cavitating pumps is introduced and contexted. Finally, emphasis is placed on the paucity of our understanding of pump dynamics when the device or system is subjected to global oscillation. [DOI: 10.1115/1.4023663]

MULTI PHASE COMPUTATIONAL FLUID DYNAMICS MODELING OF CAVITATING FLOWS OVER AXISYMMETRIC HEAD-FORMS

In the present paper, partial cavitation over various head-forms was studied numerically to predict the shape of the cavity. Navier-Stokes equations in addition to an advection equation for vapor volume fraction were solved. Mass transfer between the phases was modeled by a sink term in vapor equation in the numerical analysis for different geometries in wide range of cavitation numbers. The r...

Cloud Cavitation with Particular Attention to Pumps

In many cavitating liquid flows, when the number and concentration of the bubbles exceeds some critical level, the flow becomes unsteady and large clouds of cavitating bubbles are periodically formed and then collapse when convected into regions of higher pressure. This phenomenon is known as cloud cavitation and when it occurs it is almost always associated with a substantial increase in the c...

Flow Instabilities in Cavitating and Non-Cavitating Pumps

It is well known that flow instabilities called rotating stall and surge may occur in non-cavitating turbomachines at flow rates smaller than design. Rotating stall is a local instability at the turbomachinery which is basically not dependent on the hydraulic system in which the turbomachine is installed. The stalled region rotates faster than impeller. Surge is a system instability in a hydrau...
